How clean is clean enough
Less than you think, and there's evidence that over-cleaning has a real cost.
This is the thing new guys worry about most and experienced guys worry about least. That gap is the whole lesson.
The short version
For prostate play with a small toy, you almost certainly don't need to do anything beyond having had a normal poo at some point that day.
Your rectum isn't a storage container. Stuff passes through it and then it's empty. What you're going in with is small and going in a few inches. Most of the time there is simply nothing there.
Why more isn't better
Douching means flushing water up there. It's common, and plenty of guys do it before every session out of anxiety rather than need.
Worth being precise about what that shows. It's 51 men, at one site, measured at one point in time. It shows that men who douche differ from men who don't. It doesn't prove douching caused the difference.
But it points the same way as common sense: your gut has a bacterial ecology, and repeatedly flushing it out disturbs that ecology. There's a cost, it isn't zero, and it buys you very little for the kind of session you're about to do.
What we'd actually suggest
Have a shower. Soap and water on the outside. That's genuinely most of it.
Go if you need to go. If you're due a poo, have one first. Don't force one.
Wash your hands and trim your nails. More important than anything you do internally. A short nail edge is one of the more common ways men scratch themselves.
Wash the toy. Warm water and unscented soap, before and after. Silicone can take it.
The lever nobody mentions
Ask experienced men how they stopped worrying about this and a surprising number give the same answer, and it has nothing to do with cleaning.
We're making no health claim here and that isn't our lane. It's a practical note: the men who describe the least anxiety about mess mostly sorted it out at the diet end rather than the plumbing end, and it's a lot cheaper than kit.
If you want to rinse anyway
Some guys just feel better having done it, and feeling relaxed matters more here than almost anything else. If that's you, keep it minimal:
- Plain lukewarm water only. No soap inside, no additives.
- A small bulb, not a hose or a shower attachment.
- Low volume, and let it come out. You're rinsing, not filling.
- Not every session. Save it for when you actually expect to need it.
The bit nobody says out loud
You might see a bit of mess. Occasionally. It's a butt.
If that happens it isn't a disaster and it doesn't mean you prepared wrong. Put a dark towel down, deal with it in thirty seconds, carry on.
Guys who treat this as a catastrophe end up so tense that nothing works, which is a much bigger problem than the thing they're worried about.
